Trends in gamma-hydroxybutyrate use, harms and treatment in Australia, 2013 to 2024
There is significant concern about potential rising harms from gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) but an absence of studies internationally synthesising data across indicators to identify changes in harms and broader patterns of use. This paper contributes to addressing this gap by measuring national trends in GHB use, harms and treatment in Australia.
Systemic inequities in alcohol licensing: Case studies in eight Aotearoa New Zealand communities
In a descriptive, multimethod qualitative study, we analysed eight decisions to grant off-licence approvals in socioeconomically deprived areas. Each licence was opposed. Hearing participants and local residents were interviewed. Data were thematically analysed to identify factors affecting objector influence, alignment with Indigenous rights and residents' awareness of alcohol issues and licensing processes.
Estimating the alcohol-related burden of child maltreatment among Māori in Aotearoa, New Zealand
A cohort study of 16,617 Māori aged 0–17 and their parents from 2000 to 2017 was conducted using the Statistics New Zealand Integrated Data Infrastructure. A Bayesian piecewise exponential model estimated the risk of time to first child maltreatment event. This analysis used data from child protection, hospital, mortality and police records, and specifically focused on the risk associated with exposure to parents with an alcohol-attributable hospitalisation or mental health/addiction service use event. Potential confounders for both parents and Māori (0–17 years) were included. We calculated a population-attributable fraction to estimate the proportion of maltreatment cases that could be attributed to alcohol in 2017.
Māori nurse practitioners: The intersection of patient safety and culturally safe care from an Indigenous lens
To describe Māori NPs perspectives on patient safety when caring for Māori and understand how Māori NPs deliver safe health care. A group of five Māori NPs worked alongside a Māori nurse researcher to explore their perceptions of patient safety. Together, they held an online hui (focus group) in early 2024. Data were analysed collectively, informed by kaupapa Māori principles, using reflexive thematic analysis.
